Palak dal is a delicious and nutritious Indian dish made with lentils (dal) and spinach (palak). It's a great source of protein, fiber, and vitamins. Here's a simple recipe to prepare palak dal:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup split yellow lentils (moong dal or toor dal)
- 2 cups fresh spinach leaves, washed and chopped
- 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
- Salt to taste
- Water, as needed
- Fresh cilantro leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Rinse the lentils (dal) thoroughly under running water. Then, soak them in water for about 15-20 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- In a pressure cooker or a large pot, add the soaked lentils, turmeric powder, chopped spinach, chopped tomatoes, green chilies, ginger-garlic paste, and salt. Pour in enough water to cover the ingredients, usually about 3-4 cups.
- If using a pressure cooker, close the lid and cook for about 4-5 whistles or until the lentils are soft and fully cooked. If using a pot, bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer until the lentils are cooked and tender (approximately 30-40 minutes).
- Once the lentils are cooked, heat ghee or oil in a small pan. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn translucent and slightly golden.
- Pour the tempering mixture (prepared in step 5) into the cooked lentils and spinach mixture. Stir well to combine.
- Add garam masala and adjust salt if needed. Simmer the dal for a few more minutes, allowing the flavors to blend together.
- Remove from heat and garnish with freshly chopped cilantro leaves.
- Serve hot with steamed rice or roti (Indian bread).
Enjoy your homemade palak dal!
