Ingredients:

  • 4-5 slices of bread (white or whole wheat), cut into small pieces
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 small green chili, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram)
  • 1/2 teaspoon chana dal (split Bengal gram)
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Lemon wedges for serving (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a pan or kadai over medium heat.
  2. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add cumin seeds, urad dal, and chana dal. Sauté for a minute until the dals turn golden brown.
  3. Add asafoetida and chopped green chili. Sauté for a few seconds.
  4. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  5. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala powder. Mix well to coat the onions with the spices.
  6. Add the finely chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften and release their juices.
  7. Add salt to taste and mix well.
  8. Now add the bread pieces to the pan and gently toss them with the onion-tomato mixture, ensuring they are coated well with the spices. Cook for a couple of minutes until the bread absorbs the flavors and becomes slightly crispy.
  9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  10. Serve the Bread Upma hot as a breakfast or snack. You can also squeeze some lemon juice over it for an extra tangy flavor, if desired.
