Churumuri

Churumuri is a popular street food snack from Karnataka, India. It is similar to Jhal Muri and is made with puffed rice, vegetables, spices, and chutneys. Here's a recipe to make Churumuri:



Ingredients:

  • 4 cups puffed rice
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped cucumber
  • 1/4 cup grated carrot
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped coriander leaves
  • 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts
  • 2 tablespoons roasted gram dal (pottukadalai)
  • 1 tablespoon mustard oil (can be substituted with any other cooking oil)
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind chutney
  • 1 tablespoon green chutney
  • 1 teaspoon chaat masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (optional, adjust to your spice preference)
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemon juice to taste

For garnishing:

  • Finely chopped coriander leaves
  • Sev (crispy noodles)

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add puffed rice, chopped onions, tomatoes, cucumber, grated carrot, coriander leaves, roasted peanuts, and roasted gram dal. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
  2. Add mustard oil to the mixture and toss it well to coat the ingredients evenly. Mustard oil adds a distinct flavor to Churumuri, but you can substitute it with any other cooking oil if desired.
  3. Add tamarind chutney and green chutney to the bowl. Toss the mixture gently to coat all the ingredients with the chutneys.
  4. Sprinkle chaat masala, red chili powder (if using), and salt over the mixture. Squeeze some lemon juice on top.
  5. Mix everything together until all the ingredients are well combined and coated with the spices and chutneys. Taste and adjust the seasoning or add more chutney if desired.
  6. Garnish the Churumuri with additional chopped coriander leaves and sev (crispy noodles).
  7. Serve the Churumuri immediately in bowls or cones made of newspaper or paper cups.
