Fish Moilee

Fish Moilee, also known as Meen Moilee, is a popular Kerala-style fish curry that is known for its delicate flavors and creamy coconut-based gravy. It is a mild and aromatic curry that pairs well with steamed rice or appam. Here's a recipe to make Fish Moilee:

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams fish fillets (such as kingfish, tilapia, or snapper), cut into medium-sized pieces
  • 1 cup thick coconut milk
  • 1 cup thin coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (optional, for a bit of heat)
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Heat coconut oil in a deep pan or a kadai over medium heat.
  2. Add mustard seeds to the hot oil and let them splutter. Then add fenugreek seeds and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds until the curry leaves turn fragrant.
  3. Add chopped onions and green chilies to the pan. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
  5. Lower the heat and add turmeric powder, red chili powder (if using), coriander powder, and black pepper powder. Mix well and cook for a minute.
  6. Add thin coconut milk to the pan and mix it with the spices. Let it simmer for a couple of minutes.
  7. Gently place the fish fillets into the pan, ensuring they are submerged in the coconut milk.
  8. Cover the pan and cook on low heat for about 8-10 minutes or until the fish is cooked and tender.
  9. Once the fish is cooked, add thick coconut milk to the pan and mix gently. Be careful not to break the fish pieces.
  10. Add salt to taste and simmer for a minute or two to heat the curry without boiling it.
  11. Stir in lemon juice and garnish with fresh curry leaves.
  12. Remove from heat and let it sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  13. Serve the Fish Moilee hot with steamed rice or appam.

Enjoy the creamy and flavorful Fish Moilee, which is a delightful representation of Kerala's cuisine and coastal flavors.
