Karma Prashad

Karma Prashad, also known as Karah Prashad, is a sweet and sacred offering served in Gurudwaras (Sikh temples) during religious ceremonies and festivals. It is made from equal parts of whole wheat flour, sugar, and ghee (clarified butter). Here's a recipe to prepare Karma Prashad:

Karma Prashad

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (atta)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup ghee (clarified butter)
  • 4 cups water
  • A handful of chopped almonds or cashews (optional)
  • A pinch of cardamom powder (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a heavy-bottomed pan or kadai, heat the ghee over medium heat.

  2. Add the whole wheat flour (atta) to the pan and roast it in the ghee. Stir continuously to ensure even browning and to prevent the flour from burning.

  3. Roast the flour until it turns golden brown and emits a fragrant aroma. This process may take around 10-15 minutes.

  4. While the flour is roasting, in a separate saucepan, bring the water to a boil.

  5. Gradually add the boiling water to the roasted flour, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.

  6. Cook the mixture on medium heat, stirring constantly, until the water is absorbed and the mixture thickens.

  7. Add the sugar to the mixture and continue stirring until the sugar dissolves completely.

  8. Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the ghee starts to separate from the mixture. The Karma Prashad should have a smooth and thick consistency.

  9. If using, add the chopped almonds or cashews and cardamom powder to the mixture and stir well.

  10. Remove the pan from heat and let the Karma Prashad cool slightly.

  11. Serve the warm Karma Prashad as a blessed offering or prasad.

Note: Karma Prashad is traditionally prepared in Gurudwaras with immense devotion and reverence. The process is usually done by the volunteers or sewadars in the temple kitchen. While this recipe provides a basic method to prepare Karma Prashad at home, it is important to remember the significance and sanctity of the offering when consuming it.
