Kerala Prawn Curry

 Kerala Prawn Curry, also known as Chemmeen Curry, is a popular seafood dish from the coastal state of Kerala, India. It is known for its rich and flavorful coconut-based gravy. Here's a recipe to make Kerala Prawn Curry:



Ingredients:

  • 500 grams prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

For Tempering:

  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves

Instructions:

  1. In a blender, grind the grated coconut along with a little water to make a smooth paste. Set aside.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a deep pan or a kadai over medium heat.
  3. Add fenugreek seeds to the hot oil and let them splutter.
  4. Add chopped onions and green chilies to the pan and sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  5. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another minute until the raw smell disappears.
  6. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  7. Now, add the red chili powder, turmeric powder, and coriander powder to the pan. Mix well and cook for a minute.
  8. Add the prawns to the pan and stir-fry for a few minutes until they turn pink and start to curl up.
  9. Pour the ground coconut paste into the pan and mix it with the prawns.
  10. Add water as needed to adjust the consistency of the curry. Add salt to taste and mix well.
  11. Bring the curry to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the flavors meld together and the prawns are cooked through.
  12. In a separate small pan, heat a tablespoon of coconut oil for tempering. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add dried red chilies and curry leaves. Stir for a few seconds until the curry leaves turn crisp.
  13. Pour the tempering over the prepared prawn curry and mix gently.
  14. Garnish with fresh curry leaves.
  15. Serve the Kerala Prawn Curry hot with steamed rice or appam, a traditional Kerala bread.
