Mohan Thaal is a traditional Indian sweet from the state of Rajasthan. It is a rich and indulgent dessert made with a combination of ghee, flour, sugar, and a variety of nuts and dried fruits. Here's a recipe to prepare Mohan Thaal:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup besan (chickpea flour)
- 1 cup ghee (clarified butter)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped almonds
- 1/4 cup chopped cashews
- 1/4 cup chopped pistachios
- 1/4 cup chopped dried coconut (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
- A pinch of saffron strands (optional)
- Silver varq (edible silver foil) for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
Heat a heavy-bottomed pan or kadhai on low heat and add ghee to it. Allow the ghee to melt completely.
Add the besan (chickpea flour) to the melted ghee and mix well. Stir continuously to avoid lumps and to ensure that the besan is evenly cooked.
Continue stirring and cooking the besan in ghee on low heat until it turns aromatic and starts to change color. It should turn golden brown in color and release a nutty aroma. This process may take around 15-20 minutes, so be patient and stir consistently.
Once the besan is cooked, remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
In a separate bowl, mix the powdered sugar, chopped almonds, cashews, pistachios, dried coconut (if using), cardamom powder, and saffron strands (if using).
Add the sugar and nut mixture to the slightly cooled besan and ghee mixture. Mix everything together well until all the ingredients are combined.
Transfer the mixture onto a greased plate or tray. Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to spread and press the mixture evenly.
If desired, garnish the Mohan Thaal with silver varq (edible silver foil) for an elegant touch. Gently press the silver varq onto the surface of the sweet.
Allow the Mohan Thaal to cool completely at room temperature. Once cooled, cut it into square or diamond-shaped pieces.
Your Mohan Thaal is now ready to be served. It is a delightful sweet that can be enjoyed on festive occasions or as a special treat. Store the Mohan Thaal in an airtight container at room temperature and consume within a week for the best taste and freshness. Enjoy!
