Momos

Momos are a popular dumpling dish originating from Nepal and Tibet but enjoyed in various parts of Asia. They are typically filled with a mixture of ground meat (such as chicken, pork, or beef), vegetables, and spices. Here's a basic recipe to prepare chicken momos:



Ingredients: For the dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Water (as needed)

For the filling:

  • 1 cup ground chicken
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup cabbage, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro (coriander leaves), chopped
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour and salt. Gradually add water and knead until you have a smooth and pliable dough. Cover the dough and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.

  2. In another bowl, combine the ground chicken, chopped onion, cabbage, minced garlic, grated ginger, chopped cilantro, soy sauce, oil, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.

  3. Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into a thin circle on a lightly floured surface. The circles should be around 3-4 inches in diameter.

  4. Place a spoonful of the chicken filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Pinch and pleat the edges to seal the momo, ensuring that it is completely sealed to prevent any filling from leaking.

  5. Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling until you have made all the momos.

  6. In a steamer, place a layer of cabbage leaves or parchment paper to prevent the momos from sticking. Arrange the momos in the steamer, making sure they are not touching each other to prevent them from sticking together.

  7. Steam the momos for about 10-12 minutes or until the dough becomes translucent and the filling is cooked through.

  8. Once cooked, remove the momos from the steamer and serve them hot with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as soy sauce, tomato chutney, or spicy chili sauce.
