Kadala Curry Recipe: Ingredients:

  • 1 cup black chickpeas (kala chana), soaked overnight
  • 2 medium-sized onions, finely chopped
  • 2 medium-sized tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 2 teaspoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • A few curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions:

  1. Drain the soaked chickpeas and rinse them well. Set them aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan or pressure cooker. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  3. Once the seeds start to splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.

  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  6. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.
  7. Add the soaked chickpeas to the mixture and mix them well with the masala.
  8. If using a pressure cooker, add enough water to cover the chickpeas and pressure cook for about 5-6 whistles or until the chickpeas are cooked and tender. If using a pan, add water accordingly and simmer until the chickpeas are cooked.
  9. Once the chickpeas are cooked, add garam masala and curry leaves. Give it a final mix and cook for another 5 minutes.
  10. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with puttu.
