➤2 tomatoes, chopped
➤1 green chili, chopped
➤1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
➤1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
➤1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
➤1 teaspoon coriander powder
➤1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
➤1/2 teaspoon garam masala
➤Salt to taste
➤3 cups water (for cooking)
➤2 tablespoons oil or ghee
➤Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
For Tempering (Tadka):
➤1 teaspoon cumin seeds
➤2-3 cloves garlic, minced
➤1-2 dried red chilies
➤A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
Instructions:
1. Wash the chana dal thoroughly and soak it in water for at least 30 minutes.
2. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked chana dal, chopped onions, tomatoes, green chili, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala, salt, and water.
3. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook for about 4-5 whistles or until the chana dal is soft and cooked thoroughly. If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can also cook it in a pot, but it will take longer.
4. Once the chana dal is cooked, heat oil or ghee in a separate pan for tempering.
5. Add cumin seeds to the hot oil. When the cumin seeds splutter, add minced garlic, dried red chilies, and a pinch of asafoetida. Saute until the garlic turns golden brown.
6. Pour the tempering over the cooked chana dal and give it a gentle stir.
7. Simmer the dal for an additional 5-10 minutes on low heat, allowing the flavors to meld.
8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Serve hot Chana Dal with rice or Indian bread like chapati or naan. It's a wholesome and nutritious dish that is both satisfying and flavorful. Adjust the spice levels according to your preference.
